Dr. Catherine Tsai grew up in sunny California but currently enjoys the four seasons that the East coast provides. She graduated from UCLA medical school in 1998 and completed her internal medicine residency in 2001 from Spokane, Washington. She has spent the last ten years in the United States Navy involved in various activities, as well as patient and residency teaching. She was an Assistant Professor of Medicine for the Uniformed Health Sciences students and Internal Medicine Residency program at Portsmouth Naval Medical Center in Virginia.

It was during her time in the Navy that she completed her fellowship in Gastroenterology (2006) at the National Capital Consortium in Bethesda, Maryland. She is a diplomate in both Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. Her interests include the prevention of gastric and colon cancer, occult GIB, capsule endoscopy, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease and women's health issues. She and her husband, Eugene, have three children.
